Album Reviews

Introduction

Note: This page was last modified Tuesday, 01-Jan-2008 13:21:16 EST. I'm editing it now to fix a broken link and to say that attempting to grade albums is ridiculous. I was in one of my moods of doing weird things while not clearly noting the obvious. The grading on this page is just the average rating of 5 stars the tracks on the album got. What makes this webpage even more absurd is that my tastes are not static: Listening to a song repeatedly changes how I feel about it, and sometimes I'll stumble across a song in my library and wonder why I had given it that rating ...

My journal entry explains the initial reason for this page, and credits ensure its continued existence — I lack the confidence to think you would otherwise care to read my opinions about music...

Reviewing CDs for WMTS, some simply say "this artist sounds like [Group X], recommend 1,2,9" and scan it for profanity. I decided that wasn't enough for me, so while listening to the album I jot down any thoughts I have (and often cite the songs that spark the thought), and then from there write a small paragraph (a few sentences) and tape it to the insert of the CD, hoping to briefly describe the music, band, and my impression of it. Then I direct them here if they want to read more.

Head to my last.fm webpage to see music I've recently heard (automatically updated weekly. That profile lists all the music I've listened to on my laptop or on my Ipod since July 2006.) See the charts on my last.fm profile if you want to see the albums and artists to which I mostly listen. This gives you a frame of reference for my opinions. (I was also raised on a wide variety of music, and studied both piano and guitar classically.)

I try to keep a copy of every album I've reviewed for WMTS, both for reference and for listener requests (if I have a show.)

The albums with a whole bunch of comments were the ones I reviewed for WMTS. All the rest I've put up for perspective, to show you my taste in music, and just for my own records. The 'length' column is off by a few minutes, since iTunes sucks and only gives album lengths in fractions of ten. (So an album that's 63 minutes is listed as 60, while an album that's 68 clocks in at 66, etc.)
To clarify: If the Comments don't address swearing ('Clean' or 'NO: ...') then I didn't review that CD for WMTS. Also, please keep in mind these ratings are only a reflection of how much I like the songs in them, not of the albums themselves. I'm rating the songs out of five, not the albums.

The Color Scheme: I wanted to use my high school's old grading scale of 94-100% is an A, but I couldn't find it. So instead I've developed my own, based loosely off MTSU's:

ColorMeaningGradeOut of 5
Gold The Top 10%First 10% listed4.71-5.00
SilverA90.2%-100%4.51-5.00

As of 1 January 2008, I counted 130 albums listed here. Wow! ... I want to design this page so it lists the albums in a table similar to this one, but the comments are expanded when you hover your cursor over them. I'm still learning HTML and CSS, so I think I still have a way to go before learning some script for that. Help would be appreciated...

Finally, a brief explanation of the table headings:

Artist
The artist(s) who recorded the album.
Album
The album released by the artist.
Genre
I'm not so good with identifying genres (because the way I think differs significantly from others'). I state what I think it is or should be; I could be wrong.
Overall Rating
I listen to the tracks in iTunes, rate each track, and then average them all together.
5 Stars
I love the song, or I like it enough to where I'll listen to it on my 5-star shuffle list.
4 Stars
I like it. Not something I'll listen to on a regular basis (see above), but enough to enjoy it occasionally.
3 Stars
I didn't care for it, but it wasn't necessarily bad.
2 Stars
I didn't like it and found problems with it.
1 Stars
It sucks. Typically the only reason some tracks get this much is because they stimulate the economy in existing.
0 Stars
Pure crap; listening to this actually offended me. See Stuporhero's album for fine examples of 0-star songs. (0.8 stars overall, almost one star: The album is almost good enough to really suck.)
A 30 second track holds as much weight as a fifteen minute track for this album rating: I believe artists should always be careful work their work. Because a shorter album could then get a better rating, I include the following:
Duration
Since all works aren't created equally, I list how long the albums actually are. A five-star album consisting of only four three-minute tracks would otherwise be a bit misleading.
Comments
The actual review of the album, I typically jot comments down into the Comments section in iTunes song details windows, and then copy and paste them here. I wish I knew the HTML to 'minimize' these until you wanted to see them. It'd make this page far more compact.
Date
The date I added the album to this page.

This album review table was last modified 8 January 2008.

Artist Album Genre Rating Length (Min) Comments Date (M/D/Y)
System of a Down Steal This Album! Rock 4.94 44 One of my favorite albums. 16 tracks and 15 of them are 5-star songs. 5/18/06
Ana Vidovic The Croatian Prodigy Classical Guitar 4.93 59.7 The first classical guitarist I've ever seen, and she remains one of the best. 5/18/06
Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream Alternative Rock 4.92 60 This album rocks, and is one of my favorites. 5/19/06
Rammstein Reise, Reise Industrial Rock 4.91 48.3 I really liked every song on this album. I was surprised; of the 11 tracks only 1 got 4 stars -- all the rest got 5. 5/19/06
Ana Vidovic Guitar Recital Classical Guitar 4.86 66 The first classical guitar album I purchased, and it remains one of the best. 5/18/06
Dream Theater Live At Budokan [Disc 2] Progressive Rock 4.83 56.7 Their live performances are sometimes better than their recordings. 5/21/06
Dream Theater Live At Budokan [Disc 1] Progressive Rock 4.83 55.4 First Dream Theater album I've ever seen. I was floored; so awesome. 5/21/06
Tool Opiate Alternative Rock 4.83 26.7 High rating, but look at how long it is. 27 minutes, only six songs on it. After some debating I finally gave "Opiate" 5 stars. It's got such an anti-religion message, but it's a good song. Besides, having an anti-religion message isn't necessarily bad ... (see Martin Luther) 5/21/06
The Beatles Abbey Road Classic Rock 4.82 47.2 No comments necessary. 5/18/06
Smashing Pumpkins Pisces Iscariot Alternative Rock 4.79 57.3 One of my favorite albums. 5/19/06
Opeth My Arms, Your Hearse Metal 4.78 ≈ ((5 * 7) + (4 * 2)) / 9 52 I like almost every song on this album. They make me think of some cold, dark wintery forest. Maybe it's gothic; I'm not really sure what you would call such imagery. I don't think this music is evil, though; it's not obviously antiChristian like Dimmu Borgir, and their lyrics are rather generic (and, to me, unimportant, since I can't understand most of them anyway.) 1/6/08
Pepe Romero Pepe Romero Guitar Classical Guitar 4.76 58.1 Thanks to the MTSU Music Library for this gem! He's like Ana Vidovic... and also from one of them weird European countries... 5/21/06
BT Movement in Still Life: US release with alternate tracks Electronic 4.73 ≈ ((8 * 5) + (3 * 4)) / 11 56 I might have rated the songs a bit too highly, simply because it's a style of electronic music I'd never before heard. It makes very nice interstate-driving music, and the songs on the album are all different, with different singers, etc. They're all very well-done. If you know what this style is called, please tell me. 1/4/8
The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Classic Rock 4.72 36.8 Hopefully you know this album as well. 5/18/06
The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Classic Rock 4.71 42.4 Classic album. 5/19/06
Newsboys going public Christian Rock 4.7 36.4 First Christian Rock album I got -- my parents bought it for my older brother when I was like 12 – and it's really good. But really short. 10 tracks each about 3 minutes. 5/24/06
The Cranberries No Need to Argue Alternative Rock 4.69 50.5 Irish Alternative Rock. 5/19/06
Dream Theater Live At Budokan [Disc 3] Progressive Rock 4.67 53.5 First Dream Theater album I've ever seen. I was floored; so awesome. 5/21/06
Santana Abraxas Rock 4.67 51.1 Big naked black lady on the album cover! Is this porn or music? :o 5/22/06
A Perfect Circle Mer de Noms Alternative Rock 4.67 ≈ ((9 * 5) + (2 * 4) + (1 * 3)) / 12 44.3 Last time I rated this here (5/19/06) I gave it a 3.75. My comment was, "Surely I like APC more than this..." I suppose my mood affects how much I like something, just making more obvious the fact that tastes are largely subjective. I will say that I think the songs by themselves are good, but the album as a whole is monotonous: a lot of their songs are at similar tempos, the same guitar effects, written in the same style, sung the same way, so it quickly begins to feel as if the entire album is one long, depressing song. 1/1/8
System of a Down System of a Down Rock 4.67 ≈ ((5 * 8) + (4 * 4)) / 12 41 Good stuff. The album averaged 4.62/5 when I added it 5/18/06. I listened to this album again, and like it more now. It has songs you can really get into rhythmically, and it's silly yet has something to say. 1/6/08
System of a Down Hypnotize Rock 4.67 39.6 Good stuff. 5/18/06
Klaus Badelt Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Soundtrack 4.66 43.5 Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! 5/22/06
Dream Theater Falling Into Infinity Progressive Rock 4.64 78 Woohoo. 5/21/06
System of a Down Toxicity Rock 4.64 44 Good stuff. 5/18/06
Liquid Tension Experiment Liquid Tension Experiment 2 Progressive Rock 4.63 72 Very nice, very nice. They tried some things I didn't like, but overall it is very good. 6/9/6
Deep Forest Deep Forest New Age / Electronica 4.63 46.8 Forest! Jungle! Tribal singing! Synthesizers + tribal singing = ? 5/21/06
Acroma Orbitals Rock 4.62 56.6 Heard on Pandora and it sounded really good. Purchased for $4.48 on eBay, kind of an impulse buy. Turned out to be pretty good. Played the song that made me buy the album in my first show. 6/9/6
Vince Guaraldi Oh, Good Grief! Jazz 4.62 27.9 High rating, good music, but look at how short it is! It always bugs me how short this album is. 5/21/6
菅野よう子 攻殻機動隊 STAND ALONE COMPLEX O.S.T.+ Animé Soundtrack 4.61 ≈ ((11 * 5) + (7 * 4)) / 18 72

I want to learn Japanese, because there's a lot of Japanese in this album (hint: It's from Japan) and I'm clueless. Even so, many songs are in English (maybe half?), and it's very well done. Yoko Kanno is one of my favorite artists; I've never heard music from her that was bad. I first heard of her through her work with Cowboy Bebop (awesome animé.) I discovered a song I liked on this album from Pandora Radio, said it would be a nice present for Christmas, actually got it for Christmas, and now I want to see this film and learn Japanese.

Anyway, something about the music: Most of it has dreamy aspects to it, as well as many different elements intertwined. Several different instruments, both acoustic and electric, or synth. and orchestration, in every song.

1/1/08
Malice Mizer Bara no seidou Visual kei / Victorian Goth (Organs, etc) 4.6 = ((5 * 7) + (4 * 2) + (3 * 1)) / 10 51 Good music ... not something I'd listen to on a regular basis, but good for a shuffle playlist. All in japanese, so I haven't a clue what the songs are about, with five-star songs like Chinurareta kajitsu. Makes me think of dark Halloween haunted mansions. Good instrumentation; I think they achieve the effect they want very nicely. In case you're curious, the three-star song is Bara ni irodorareta akui to higeki no makuake. Any translations would be very much appreciated. 1/8/08
Nachito Herrera Live at the Dakota 2 Cuban Jazz 4.6

Clean. Cuban jazz. This is a great album, and I'm going to seek out more of Nachito Herrera.
1: 4.3/5 Nice intro, takes a little while to get going.
2: 4.3/5 Same as #1.
3: 5/5. Nice jazz.
4: 5/5. Hard to follow, but VERY welldone. Fast jazz. Nice drum solo! Good ensemble. Keeps you moving!
5: 4/5. Little slow, but melodic.
6: 5/5. Nice piece, and progressive. Little random.
7: 5/5. Creative, fun.
8: 3.8/5. Nice, kinda dull/boring.
9: 5/5. Fast, nice to move to. Rhythmic! Awesome drummer.

Sonata Arctica The End Of This Chapter Power Metal 4.59 ≈ ((12 * 5) + (3 * 4) + (2 * 3)) / 17 79 A great collection of their hits, imported from Japan! I was very surprised to get this gift for Christmas: music from Japan tends not to be cheap. As shown by the rating, I love their music. It's not necessarily good as far as art goes, but it's such cheesy European Metal that it's incredibly fun. Can you feel the fire burning?! It's significantly better than DragonForce, if you enjoy power metal: They are more melodic, and they don't wank on the guitar as much. I think it's similar to Stratovarius. 1/1/08
"Weird Al" Yankovic Running With Scissors Comedy 4.58 49.8 Hardy har har. 5/21/6
Serj Tankian Elect the Dead (Political) Rock 4.58 ≈ ((8 * 5) + (3 * 4) + (1 * 3)) / 12 45

I admit it: His voice can be annoying at times (when he wails in "Elect the Dead" for example.) Overall, the album is amazing. The one song I didn't like was "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition." It was too weird, and I found it annoying; it was very artistic, though. Most (if not all) of the songs are against war and the apathy of mankind. I highly recommend checking into this album; many songs (or their music videos) are currently hosted on youtube.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium: Mars [Disc 2] Rock 4.57 59.8 Listening to two hours solid of Red Hot Chili Peppers may test the endurance of many who aren't already RHCP fans, and it might test even fans' patience... but in this case it's really not bad at all. Even if you zone out and do other things, it makes good background music. It seems I'm going to have to go out and purchase this album – the music is good, and the CDs and inserts are nice and shiny.
This disc is slightly better than the first, and the first is very good. I think this album's going to be a financial success, and it's good to see a new album from a band I enjoy.
6/21/6
The Beatles Revolver Classic Rock 4.57 34.8 Get this album if you don't already have it. 5/19/06
Murray Perahia J.S. Bach: Keyboard Concertos #1, 2, & 4 Piano and Orchestra 4.56 53.2 Checked this album out from the public library, and it turned out to be really good! They have good music at the public library! 5/19/06
Dream Theater Octavarium Progressive Rock 4.55 72 I'd hoped this album was better. 5/21/06
Rammstein Mutter Industrial Rock 4.55 45.4 Explosive rock? Yay german. 5/19/06
System of a Down Mezmerize Rock 4.55 36.4 Good stuff. 5/18/06
Enya A Day Without Rain New Age 4.55 34.3 Peaceful? 5/20/06
Liquid Tension Experiment Liquid Tension Experiment 1 Progressive Rock 4.54 72 Yay. I've been trying to get this album for a long time... Nice, experimental stuff. A side project of Dream Theater. 5/24/06
Dream Theater Images And Words Progressive Rock 4.5 57 What's all the brew... haha? 5/21/06
Jason Mraz MR. A-Z Pop Rock / Singer-Songwriter 4.5 = ((6 * 5) + (6 * 4)) / 12 54 I really like his singing, and he writes pretty good music. He's pretty good on guitar, too. I'm still not used to the aural emphasis being on singing, though ... 1/3/8
Tommy Emmanuel Midnight Drive Jazz 4.5 40.8 Very jazzy. If you love jazz you'll really like this. 5/19/06
The Beatles Rubber Soul Classic Rock 4.5 35.6 Yay happenstance album art. 5/19/6
Tool Aenima Hard Rock 4.5 66 To give the album this rating, I ignored "Cesaro Summability" (1 star), "Useful Idiot" (1 star), "Ions" (1 star). 5/20/6
Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium: Jupiter [Disc 1] Rock 4.5 60 I'm enjoying Stadium Arcadium very much (am writing this -- or have written this -- while listening to it, from cover to cover. Very nice. Nice to see something new -- and good -- from them. 6/21/6
311 From Chaos Rock / (Reggae/Ska?) 4.5 32.1 First 311 album I got, from my brother. Amber was the first song I heard, and is so awesome. 5/19/06
Smashing Pumpkins Machina Alternative Rock 4.47 72 Lot of electronica. Kinda weird. Just barely scraps by with an A. 5/19/06
Rammstein Rosenrot Industrial Rock 4.45 48 "Te Quiero Puta!" is really funny. Not just the fact that they're speaking Spanish with German accents. "mas mas mas, por favor" lol... Interesting album. I suppose it's more advanced than Mutter, as far as doing-new-stuff goes. Six 4-star songs and five 5-star songs; so very close to being silver... 5/24/06
Paul Simon Graceland Songwriter 4.45 43 We're goin' to Graceland... yaaay... but I hate Elvis. :( 5/21/06
311 Don't Tread On Me Ska Rock 4.45 37.3 I'm not the biggest 311 fan (a lot of their rapping I don't care for), but this album is good. For the most part they follow the same formula as their other songs, but there are a few new things, and some good new songs. My only complaint is that it's so short -- 11 tracks and around 37 minutes. 6/22/6
Tommy Emmanuel Only Fingerstyle Guitar 4.43 45.5 Showing off his multitasking guitar abilities. 5/19/06
A Perfect Circle Thirteenth Step Alternative Rock 4.42 50.3 I think this should get a slightly higher rating than I've given it. At least, I like it more than Machina and Only. 5/19/06
The Cranberries Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? Alternative Rock 4.42 40.9 I like her accent. 5/19/06
Solas Reunion A Decade of Solas Irish Rock 4.41 72

Clean, as far as I could tell. Recommend tracks 2, 17, 4, 7, 9, 11, 15, 16. (Yeah. This album is good.)
About the rating: ((8 * 5) + (8 * 4) + (1 * 3)) / 17 = 4.41. To have seventeen tracks on an album, and them averaging out to be about three minutes forty seconds (guess), and for me to like them all this much? Eight 5-star songs and eight 4-star songs. That means more than half of this album I want to listen to more than once. :) Let's get to it! Tracks will be referred to by number, as usual. The second number after the track number is my rating, of five, from iTunes (5 means I'm willing to listen to it a lot, 4 means it was okay but not fantastic, 3 means I really didn't care for it.)

  1. 4. A good song, but it lacks a strong voice. Each instrument is doing something, but it's short and thin. Like a very light pastry, it's nice, but I'd like something more solid, a nice thick slice of ham, rather than a nice crumpling pastry ...
  2. 5. A nice instrumental piece. Quick fiddles, a nice thin-guitar strum to accompany it, with melodies typical of the Irish dance. The break in the middle of the song is very well done, and the drums set a very nice backbeat to it. I like!
  3. 3. A nice, traditional love song? The lyrics are probably nice; I'm too busy focusing on the song and the band as a whole -- they work well together. It's still a little too soft, though. It's so delicate, I feel like if I breathe out the singer will choke.
  4. 5. The audience likes to clap. A nice foot tapper. It picks up, but it doesn't. Like, it increases in speed, but the melody never really goes anywhere or tells you anything. It just jumps all over the plays and gives you something to dance to.
  5. 4. Ack. This singer takes some getting used to. The style, too. I'm not used to melodies like this; they kind of go up and down, back and forth, rather than linearly like American music. The melodies are more circular, I guess you could say?
  6. 4. I'm really not one for vocal pieces with soft guitar accompaniment, but I suppose this piece is rather pretty. Even though it's all southern country soul. Ick. Although it seems pretty and religious... but it's too slow!!! Nice instrumentation.
  7. 5. A nice circular piece (rondeau?) has a folk feel to it, a nice playful melody that hops around a little and invites you to, well, not exactly dance, but at least not feel so bothered. I like instrumental pieces! :)
  8. 4. A nice contemplative piece, one that blends into the background very nicely when you're busy doing other things ... (No, seriously, it does.) Flutes and violin and guitar and piano work very nicely together. She says "thanks very much everybody" a lot.
  9. 5. This song is freaking amazing. Seventh chords rock on the guitar, with the syncopation driving the song, and this singer has an incredibly sexy voice (accompanied by the female lead singer, a nice touch.) Great rhythm and melody, good singer, great song. Definitely a must hear! 5/5. With your generic-American-rock band, this would be the title track, and the album would be called "Rain and Snow". It's remarkable how well they mesh together, seamless, even singing together. Not something you get so easily from the American rock bands the record labels push today.
  10. 4. An emotional, soft piece. Too tired to pay attention to the lyrics; those aren't my strong point. I really should, though, they're singing about children. The polyphony works very well, the three singers (one female, two male) rising and falling chords.
  11. 5. Listen to this track to get a general idea of Solas. Great instrumentation, cyclical melodies, a lively beat, the combination of which makes you begin tapping your foot, regardless of what you're doing. Not sure if driving is such a good idea. ;)
  12. 4. The singer has a very nice voice, but for some reason I can't get into her singing. It's too country, and the overall effect isn't as powerful as it could be. The messages and melodies are good; this one's about Jesus and Mary. Not sure what, though.
  13. 4. You know, off this album I have yet to hear an actually bad song. I'm sure they're the generic rock of Ireland, but I really like this band. Well, the lyrics to this song suck, but the rest of the music (the band) is good.
  14. 4. Again with the flutes! This band employs a wide variety of instruments, and the effects are good! Not bad! Out with the American bands picking up tabla and playing them like bongos, the indie rock "keyboardists" who can't play piano. These guys are good. Ah, I was waiting for it! Track 14 of 17 delivers! Listen to it to find out what I'm referring to (hint: second part of the song.)
  15. And the end of the album begins a happier tone, one with the audience clapping in addition to the food tapping, no less. Not much to say about this track; it's like the rest of the album, refreshing.
  16. 5. What are irish jigs known for? Being freaking amazing, quite frankly. And by that I mean incredibly catchy and fun to dance to. Get your groove on in front of the computer! Fast, multilayered, repetitive and downright fun.
  17. 5. The most soothing song I've heard in a while. A lament poignant with emotion, forcing the listener to become thoughtful and introspective ... "New Age" relaxation? This is musicianship, to provide variety and to set mood so very well. Listen to this song.

The Vital Might Obsidian Ambient Electronica 4.41 = ((5*5) + (7*4)) / 12 16.4

Recommend: 2, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13. Good band, good album, but what's with the vocalist whining all over the place?
Once again, a track-by-track commentary:

  1. 4. Creative! A song I've not heard before! They certainly have their own style. Kind of out there, in a kind of cool way. A little difficult to grasp; they don't follow any sort of pattern.
  2. 5. I like it. They can play well, they have good melodies, and the lyrics aren't retarded! Very nice! Not heavy metal or thick rock, but they manage to be Rock and avoid the Pop aspect many bands today seem to fall into.
  3. 4. The singer here reminds me of Smash Mouth (whom I've not listened to much, so I can't say much more than that.) Close to pop rock here, but better in that they're not stereotypical/predictable or boring with their instrumentation. The lyrics here tell some sort of story, unlike some garbage that signifies your typical <insert emotion here>...
  4. 4. A very different style here! Good to see an album that isn't all the same! :) A little odd, though, a mist of crystals? Not sure what the point of this song is. Chemistry? Certainly not bad, except perhaps the vocalist (he whines a bit on the mic ~3:50; his voice even cracks while whining ...)
  5. 5. Starts out with a nice bass riff. Goes full in a nice transition. A great, cloudy song; they keep a good rhythm through the entire song. Not sure what they're singing about, something about speckled wine? Nice use of guitar distortion! Ends with 80s guitar distortion and the sound of the ocean -- not sure why but the ocean was predictable; probably because they sang of liquids and the overall effect was cloudy.
  6. 4. Good lyrics that they fit into the song very well; they don't repeat the same four stanzas like some do -- although they do repeat themselves too much for their final run... Not too much diversity in instrumentation in this song, though. Not sure how the track title is relevant to the lyrics about some relationship, though.
  7. 5. Kind of basic rock at this point, but still have nice countermelodies similar to A Perfect Circle. I can see this band getting more popular; they're good, and they have a decent quality and catchiness about them -- and they're not too complex for your average pop listener... double-pedal on the drums! This is the first album I've reviewed for WMTS that has one. Bonus points.
  8. 4. Slow track. Not bad. Solo with a saxophone! They are professional, but the singer's scratchy wail gets annoying near the end.
  9. 5. Really, this piece should be part of the previous -- 45 second ending, which leads into the next song... I'm not counting this track as a song.
  10. 5. Good beginning, good song. I like this band/album, even though the vocalists took me some getting used to. Another good song; worth a listen. I wouldn't call it progressive although others might; they change bits of the song here and there as they work through it ...
  11. 5. Another bass intro, followed by drums and guitars; they like that formula. Something worth noting: Many albums have this standard 3.5 minute tracks; theirs average around 4:40. Not sure what they're singing about here, either, but the music is pretty good. RHCPesque. Now it's starting to get repetitive, though; 10 tracks more or less like this one ...
  12. 4. They like the echo-effects. Nice, "taking it slow and sound," but nothing particularly special about this track.
  13. 4. Another creative rock song.

"Weird Al" Yankovic Bad Hair Day Comedy 4.41 42.1 I dunno. 5/21/06
William Yelverton Music Of South America Classical Guitar 4.4 60 Dr Yelverton, at the time of this statement, heads the guitar department at MTSU. 5/19/06
Dream Theater A Change of Seasons Progressive Rock 4.4 57.5 This song is almost an hour long and there are FIVE tracks on it. The first is 23 minutes, the second 11, the fifth 10.5. 5/21/06

Oisín McAuley Far From The Hills Of Donegal Irish Folk (Fiddle) 4.38 ≈ (6 * 5 + 6 * 4 + 1*3) / 13 55.8

Comparing this album with Solas' Reunion album really helped me obtain a better understanding of this genre. A track-by-track commentary:

  1. Yay! After reviewing standard music industry output (typically uncreative) for WMTS, it's a pleasure to review something of this caliber for Ms. J-E. A lively fiddle tune, this guitar/fiddle duet changes without predictability. Running through a meadow...
  2. This track appeals to the average American xenophile. Bagpipe things? Cool. You don't know what the bagpipe things are called, but you like it 'cause it's different (and seemingly unique). Not as lively as stereotyped, but certainly not dull.
  3. Another instrumental track like the former, it uses fiddle and guitar. Pretty, although a little difficult to follow at times. Changes halfway through and gets more interesting (progressive irish jigs?) Definitely a must hear to get a feel for this album.
  4. Really shows off the talent of this fiddler. A nice duet; I wonder with whom. Maybe this is a studio album, and he recorded over it? Either way, pretty like the last one. This album begins to slow: it's "more of the same" at this point.
  5. ... which would be why they decided to stick this lively jig after the last two slower tracks. Very, very nice droning effect one minute into the song; this artist really understands how to complement instruments and layer melodies upon themselves.
  6. Jazzy? I guess that's how you would describe this track. One downside to this album is all the melodies are similar: They all repeatedly loop up and down in circular arching patterns (which I guess is typical in celtic patterns).
  7. A ragtime? A cheerful little ditty giving the mental image of strolling down a nice dirt path in front of a country town on a spring day, or else a peanut gallery slapstick skit of haphazard romance. Some very tricky passages here! The overall effect is rather silly, but what can you expect when the track is titled, "Souvenir Of Venice (Hornpipe)/ Belle Of The Stage (Clog)"?
  8. Once again, he leaves no doubt about his skill as a musician. Very technical pieces. This track is more romantic; especially nice if you enjoy accordian! A rolling piece, the accompaniment takes you on a boat ride while the violin gives you a happy tour.
  9. Slightly different from the previous tracks (at least in the beginning), this one has more dissonance than you might expect; the guitar presents some very moody chords for the fiddle to jump over.
  10. No doubt a pretty track; similarly romantic to Mary's Waltz. McAuley's problem is it's too similar to the rest of every other track: the same guitar, the same violin/fiddle; there's not enough variety in sound. That's why this isn't an album you would play from start to finish. Put it on shuffle with other tracks – in my case, my 3800-track 4&5 star playlist – and you're good to go. (This is the one track I gave three stars, simply because it didn't contribute anything significant to the album.)
  11. A determined jig, whose melody is determined to make it to the finish line, this track follows a steady rhythm throughout; a nice change of pace from the "let's jump around a whole lot without any sense of direction!"
  12. I would almost consider this album a compilation of random songs: it's an assortment of traditional jigs that McAuley appears to enjoy. The reason I say this is that they all have a kind of energy to them, but are too similar to each other when heard consecutively, as previously stated. Put this on your iPod Shuffle (assuming you weren't tricked into buying something superior) and enjoy random tracks.
  13. Solo instruments. Yeah. Intense. Not for those who can't handle staring instruments in the face. (Some prefer singing along, and get bored if they can't latch onto a meaningless refrain.) Unfortunately, you won't often find a track like this one on public radio. It was even a bit much for me (thus the four of five stars).

Clean (no lyrics.) Recommend: 9, 1, 6, 2. Jazz w/ slight rock influence.
1: 5/5 Very original jazz influenced. Good background music.
2: 4.5/5 Soft, relaxed.
3: 4/5 Interesting, but a bit too random.
4: 4/5 Also nice, but a little repetitive, slightly boring.
5: 3.8/5 More melodic than the previous two. Nothing very special.
6: 4.6/5 Fast, melodic, cool. Breaks into a slower jamlike session for pianist. Returns to theme, disperses.
7: 4/5. Nice little dance.
8: 4.6/5. Good, but a little hard to follow.
9: 5/5. Bouncy and direct. Nice, a complete piece.
10: 4/5 Nice playing.
They don't BS the instruments. Sadly, #10 is the most Arabic of their music. Their name is very misleading; their oud doesn't even play that much.

Placebo Without You I'm Nothing Alternative Rock 4.33 60 Placebo's very catchy. The singer's kind of like a modern Billy Corgan (that whiny sort of singing), but a bit better with the alternation. Their melodies are nice, they use good effects (distortion and otherwise), and they don't over do it. I'm rather new to this band, and liking it. 8/16/5

Clean. Recommend: 2, 6, 8, 10.

Vaguely like Rob Zombie/Marilyn Manson in some cases: compare My World with Dragula. Also, compare the verse vocal melody of Wake Up, 0:14-0:36, 0:42-0:49, to Porcupine Tree's Halo, 0:59-1:24. ...

The vocalist appears to have no training, and it can be difficult to listen to him. Music is very pop rock, with an industrial twist. Guitars are similar to the guitars from Rammstein (10), and sometimes the drums+guitars industrial combination is the same (2), and the same instruments are used, but the similarities mostly end there. Some good hard rock, but I can't make much sense of the lyrics. The songs have a solid driving rhythm throughout them, similar to Rammstein.

Their review on the back of the CD made them sound like an inexperienced indie band, but they're actually pretty good! "Carpe", 1st track of the album, is a pretty good nine-minute instrumental, perhaps their best. Things slow down a bit with 'Micah', but then pick back up with "Death Rides A Horse", where Guitar 1 repeats a wannabe Iron Maiden riff. Good jam sessions, but a little sloppy, and not as cohesive as I'd like (see Dream Theater; by comparison Russian Circles seems to be splicing different songs with less adhesive.) The drummer's beats don't always blend well with the guitars (or vice versa.) Occasionally lays too heavy on the cymbals, too.

Protest The Hero Kezia Hard Rock 4.2

NO: 7.
Pretty good. Guitars and drumming are nice, vocals are punkish/yelling (whining and prolonged high-pitched yelling can get annoying.) Drums remind me of Slipknot for a few songs. Guitars have that generic-hard-rock distortion. Insert random instruments every now and then (piano at the end of "Blindfolds Aside", orchestra in "The Divine Suicide of K.")

No lyrics: clean. Recommend: 2, 4, 8, 10. (Reviewed for WMTS.)

A mix between jazz, abstract jazz and jam band, almost background noise/music in some cases. Each track blends into the next. The album can be rather noisy and abstract (3), a bit like modern art (4), but is good for grooving. They incorporate a bunch of electronic noises (4) and several instruments in each track, relying on piano and organ (11), saxophone, and other horns quite a bit (4). An unusual blend of percussion as well (5), from bongos to cow bells. They work well together, as a band, even if their music is rather random.

Clean (as there are no lyrics.) I also reviewed this one song by song:

  1. German is sexah! Nice beginning; album is more mood driven. 4
  2. Electronica. Mellow. 3.8
  3. Cool. A bit too much symbols for my liking, but I guess they wanted that layer of noise for thickness. 4
  4. Mellow again, good ambient electronica. This is a mood album, if that makes sense. This album is electronica mixed with drums, keyboard synthesizers, and guitars.
  5. More of the same, this track isn't much different from the others. Laidback. 4
  6. Simple but nice; repetition may not be so bad after all. This track would be boring except it again supplements your mood as background music. 3.9
  7. This track is a little boring -- I think because the drums are overbearing, and the symbols are obnoxious. Noisy. 3.5
  8. I had to play this track a second time because I completely forgot it was playing, if that says something about how well this works as background music. This one's mostly electronica. (The others used more guitar and drums.) 5
  9. More of the same. Wish this album had more variety. I didn't say much about this album because I didn't have that many problems with it. It's a pretty cool album. Soft, mellow, moody, and nice to listen to. 3.9

The Glass Set Something Unknown Rock 4 = ( (4*5) + (4*4) + (2*3) + (1*2) ) / 11 43.6

A track-by-track review:

  1. Interesting sound. A bit dreamy, and not altogether obnoxious. Recommend this track.
  2. The same song as before, only different! Their dreamy, distorted sound is catchy. Cohesive as a band and utilize synthesized sounds well.
  3. The same formula as before, and after a while the entire thing blends together, kind of as background music, because they don't ever deviate from this distorted dreamy sound. The female vocalist is very distinctly different, either annoying or good.
  4. A faster rock song, finally not the dreamy thing. Still the same guitars, though. Original melodies; definitely have potential. Recommend this track.
  5. I think this was designed to be background music. They layer their music, putting things at different sound levels, and then have indistinct vocals in the background behind the vocalist, indistinct sounds behind the guitars up front. Nice overall effect.
  6. Somehow this song is unbelieveably catchy. Great melody, and no actual words involved. Yay. BIKE CITY. Recommend this track.
  7. This track was too indy and too noisy for me. Intentionally dissonant, and I couldn't really tell what she was singing about so it was just noise.
  8. This track was just stupid. They're pretty much repeating everything they've done before, but with asinine lyrics. "buh buh buh buh buh went the bell, the one that says welcome to hell. find a reason, find a reason." To listen to this song. Ugh.
  9. Picks back up here with good melodies. They return to their dreamy thing.
  10. Back to Indie Rock. Mediocre melodies, utterly pointless, stupid lyrics.
  11. A nice closing; not much different from the rest.

The Dresden Dolls Yes, Virginia... Goth Alternative Rock 3.97 55.2 NO: 2, 3, 6, 7, 13. Recommend: 1, 9, 10.
I must say: This music scares me a bit (haunting, dark lyrics.) You have to stop and wonder what you're dealing with. Very impressive to think that all this comes from just two people... My first introduction to this duo (in 2005) was from Sijtske Barnes, a rather bitchy liberal girl who decided she didn't like me (and frankly I can't much blame her.) She was playing "Coin-Operated Boy" on the way to lunch one day. After listening to half this album, I soon realized why she liked them. A note about the album art: all are photos of a misty image, against a backdrop of ruined, destroyed buildings. To give you an idea of the music.
Amanda (female vocal)'s singing reminds me strongly of Dolores O'Riordan, and, like Wikipedia says, "[her] keening, powerful voice is the most distinctive element of the group's sound." That, and rapidly fluctuating dynamics, pounding, tinkering keys and noises and drums and immediately silencing ... tinkering sound, there but not quite, angrily speaking sarcastically ... A rather iconoclastic sound for a generation that just wants to say, "omg wtf, jackass." The difference between her and Dolores is Amanda is almost exclusively wailing, and sounding all-around pissed off. An example of her "wretched" singing (to make a point) can be found in "First Orgasm."
The lyrics are biting, with the melodies leaping to show the anger and frustration in them. An example: "we all know / there's no hell and no hiroshima / chernobyl was a cover up / the world is really all in love / ... the truth won't save you now / the sky is falling down / everything they ever told us / shakes our faith and breaks the promise / but you can stop the truth from leaking / if you never stop believing" - Mrs. O. They are not afraid to say whatever-the-hell they want. ... and it's not always pretty... "all i know is that all around the nation / the girls are crying and the boys are masturbating" - Shores of California ... but who's to say if all this vulgarity is really necessary? Definitely appealing to a rather pessimistic crowd, regardless.
I don't like how their version of being sentimental is being so quiet you can barely hear them. Being sappy means more than a piano and turning down the volume, Amanda. ("Me & The Minibar", "Delilah") They mention sex quite a bit (too much, perhaps?) but then accuse OTHES of having a problem. "Shores of California", "First Orgasm", "Me & The Minibar", "Delilah", "Sex Changes", "Backstabber", "Dirty Business", wow, almost EVERY track on this album mentions sex. They put Morning Wood to shame (because they, unlike Morning Wood, don't advertise it.) I wish track 12 were omitted, because it's terrible -- "Me & The Minibar". The rating: (5*5)+(2*4)+(3*3)+(2*2) +1)/13=3.62. + 0.35 for originality.

I saw him Fall 2005 as a music major at MTSU, and attended his master class. He seems to have mastered his muscles, and therefore his musicality can simply flow. The rating for this album isn't really that accurate, because I rated it based on how much I liked the songs he played; so the rating's more about Chopin than it is about him. Clean. Recommend: 8, 10, 11, 4, 5, 7.

  1. Pop rock. Sings about love, happiness, loneliness. "This life's unreal or so I'm told." Catchy melodies. Repetitive, simple. As tends to happen when the lyrics are repeated too much, the vocalist gets obnoxious. 3.
  2. More pop rock; guitars almost a rip off of U2. Emo male vocalist whining into microphone; obnoxious. Nothing else worth mentioning; boring. "As much as I ry, I never let you die," is the last lyric of the song. How stupid. 2.
  3. The songs are catchy. It got me tapping along with my feet (although that might've just been jitteriness from lack of sleep) listening to it in the background, even though I want to hate it for being shallow and devoid of meaning.
  4. Okay, so it's kind of grown on me. With so much worse albums sent to WMTS -- I'm refusing to review two of them, country and singer/songwriter -- this bad stuff is actually good. Male singer is emoesque, but they can actually sing nad play; generic rock.
  5. Generic, every song on this album sounds alike, and the singer sings the same and almost the same thing in every song. I hate this trend; let's take one song, and do thirteen just like it ... 3.
  6. Vocals are clear, chord progression is catchy, accompaniment isn't boring; good pop rock. Vocals are a little too demanding for attention -- could have laid back a bit and it wouldn't have annoyed me. Lyrics about "trying and not quitting." (Stupid.)
  7. Typical emo song about a girl leaving this vocalist. Typical guitars are soft during angst, distorted/hard during the "but I won't quit!" refrain. Cheesy. Drummer plays more than just rhythm in this song! (Unless that was just his solo.)
  8. The guitars have an active part in this song, but the EQ could've been better; sometimes hard to distinguish the lyrics from the song -- not that it matters, as they're not singing much of anything significant. Follows the same formula, but better guitars.
  9. Cool guitars, horrible vocals. This song would be better if the singer wasn't there. A good example of this band; catchy stuff, but crappy singing and asinine lyrics.
  10. More about "can't seem to find my way." This song should've ended two minutes before it did; I guess they want the last song to be long. Just like the rest of the album; bit uncreative. They go for what sounds cool, I guess. Too bad there's not much content.

When I saw this album sitting in the office waiting to be reviewed, I knew I had to grab it. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't the comedy entertainment radio I'd come to associate with Garrison Keillor, but is nevertheless quite good. Exclusively a western-country show, one must remember they're meaning to entertain with a certain mindset. It was recorded in front of an audience expecting something like this -- someone expecting heavy metal naturally won't like it. The reason this didn't get a higher rating is because I hate country. That aside, I stomached it, and am glad I did. If you're a Garrison Keillor fan, check this album out; it doesn't have much humor, but it does have a lot of good country music -- 25 tracks on just one CD; for many other artists, that would be their double-album *cough*System of a Down*cough*. Some of the music I believe sucked, as well as some of the performers (I've not seen a worse pair than the two in "Goodbye to My Mama", a rather stupid song about family and friends who have died. Boo hoo, you miss your mama, but you don't say ANYTHING about papa.)

Impressive. Have that annoying modern rock not-so-good vocals and too-much-noise, but they are good musicians. The lyrics actually have a POINT, too! Wow! (At least compared to some other stuff listed below.) I was impressed with their CD insert. They like inserting other recordings at the ends and middle of their songs. NO: 2, 11. Recommend: 1, 6, 7, 4.
Vocalist is almost tonedeaf, so he's "punk" instead of "bad"... Music relies heavily upon synth beats and melody (typically fast tempo). Cool if you can ignore the singer. Track by track commentary:

  1. A very energetic beginning to the album; the fill it with their electro-synth stuff to try to get you into the album. (The rest of the songs use it as well, but not as strongly.) The best track of the album.
  2. Swear near 0:44.
  3. The electronic elements of the song are the best part of the song; they can't really sing, and their lyrics kind of suck.
  4. Recommend this track to get a feel for the album. Interesting -- pretty good, by average standards -- electronic, and for indie stuff, their lyrics actually have a point!
  5. "Your brain is just a wonderful machine, forever calculating nothing." Just a rant about nihilism (kind of sarcastic). The vocalist is "punk" (and by 'punk' I mean obnoxious, and punk.)
  6. Brief respite after that last track (which was pretty obnoxious). A pretty little ditty.
  7. Pretty funny. They use the qwerty-talker, or whatever the verbose screen-reader is called, with a synthesized cover of the song. Recommend. Kind of cool.
  8. The same formula as before. The bad thing about these modern indie bands are that, well, they do the same thing twelve times (or eleven, in this case) and call it an album. Listen to one track and you've heard the album. 2.5 minutes each.
  9. The beginning of this song made me laugh. His singing is absolutely awful. Actually, this entire song is awful. The singer is almost tonedeaf, and his melodies and lyrics are horrible. The only grace is the simplistic electronic stuff, which also sucks.
  10. I kind of ignore the singer here; apart from him, this song is pretty cool.
  11. A song about love lost; pretty stupid. They drop the f-bomb; meh. He goes to the library to grab a shovel? What?

The Year Of slow days Indie "Experimental" Rock 3.63 44.3 Clean (as far as I could tell. So boring!) Recommend: 1, 8, 5.
Singer is weak ("mantra"), and kind of disturbing ("There's Something About You"), and you want him to take three steps back from you with his eerie voice. His listless enunciation is vaguely reminiscent of David Bowie, but past him (hopefully without him), the band is decent enough; their melodies may suck, but at least they can play them. I think he's intentionally creepy, like "Sleep," their lyrics are "I think about you while you sleep, while you sleep, I think about you ..." NO STALKING PLZ. KTHX. (2/5 stars.)
This album is what I would nicely call "lethargic," ... of course, by 'lethargic' I really mean 'slow' and 'boring'. They try to call it experimental, but really it's just mediocre electronic beats and slow melodies that other mediocre bands would play faster. They have their moments of improvisation, though, like in "Calling Sky" (4/5 stars) -- although it's just the saxophone. They lay on the guitar effects, and remix and experiment with noise a bit. All in all rather a flop.

Bernard A View Beyond The Cave Indie Noise Rock 3.55 38.82

Pretty album cover. Clean, as far as I could tell. I decided to review this album by song. I typed this up already, then lost the entire thing. Grr. Version 2.0:

  1. Why was this even a track? 2.7
  2. Like Coldplay, but without the accent, the singer. Gets really noisy, and not necessarily in a good way. 4
  3. This music is the opposite of dark and brooding. Still noisy and a little intrusive. It alternates between good and obnoxious (particularly their singer, distortion, and noise.) 3.6
  4. Can't hear the singer over the noise. Cymbals smashing throughout every song; the drumming hardly varies. Beginning to sound like a Coldplay knockoff. Hard to listen to. 3
  5. Follows the same formula as all the others. Same sounds, too. I have yet to understand what the singer says. Beginning to irritate me; I could live without the crappy drummer. 3
  6. The most "rock" so far. Also the easiest to listen to. 4.4
  7. Peaceful, relaxing. 4
  8. I didn't really like this album that much. Singer and drummer both kind of suck, and the only really good things about it were the guitars, and melodies. Lyrics probably suck. (I didn't say anything about this song 'cause it's just like the rest.) 3.5

Unwed Sailor Circles EP Ambient Electronica 4.5 16.4 How in the world do you review Ambient Electronica as music? It's made to be background noise! This background noise is unobtrusive, and good for those who prefer peaceful noise to silence. Wait, no, that's just a description of background noise. The problem with THIS background noise is there's nothing that makes it any different from any other background noise. So if you like background noise, here you go, try this. I'm diggin' it, it's relaxing. Too bad it's more of a sample than an album. Guy's got some good melodies. For two tracks (11-minute four-star and five-minute five star) it gets a 4.5. It's like he submitted his work to a record label, "Here, i just finished these songs. what d'you think?" and they decided to publish it. Really, it's just one song split into two sections, and I put albums up here, not songs. But since I'm reviewing this "CD" for WMTS, there you go. Finished in 16 minutes. 6/18/6

  1. 5. New; I like it. Slightly stereotypical Indianesque stuff, but it's very smooth, and pleasing to the ear! :) The singer's NOT OBNOXIOUS! Wow. That's rare, to have a singer that's not grating to the ear (like, he actually can sing!) Melodies are nice.
  2. 4. They like the smooth rock thing. 2:30-2:50ish reminds me of Porcupine Tree.
  3. 4. That's kind of funny (but, in a way, insulting, as Mr. Pruett, Musicologist at MTSU, will tell you.) They take the tabla in this song ... and play it like a bongo. Like someone grabbing a piano and just banging chords.
  4. 2. Ugh. The singer goes into the whole "Look at me, I smoked too many cigarettes, don't I sound like crap?" singing style. Trash to listen to. Rather bluesy, and rather weak. Like, blues, but imitating 311 with the drum and guitar reggae-beat thing ...
  5. 4. Starts off slow but picks up for the second half of the song, kind of a groove song; it works better as background music than as forefront-material. Jazzy/bluesy, reminds me of Ben Folds Five, both musically and the way the singer sings.
  6. 4. Funky, and it goes well, as it has a nice background groove to it. The singing itself isn't too hot, but the beat makes up for it.
  7. 3. Too soft; it bores me rather than soothes me, especially juxtaposed against the funk rock of the previous track.
  8. 3. This track didn't connect with me; it seemed almost country, somehow, which I generally disdain. This time the "Indian" overtones just seemed stupid.
  9. 3. Singer was kind of annoying on this track (with his prolonged screeches of "daaaaaaay") and it's a pretty weak generic rock track.
  10. 4. A soothing piece about something glowing. I was working on my physics homework, so ... yeah, it wasn't annoying or distracting.
  11. 3. Oh, god. He actually startled me when he started singing. Bad singer = bad song. It's difficult to see the beauty of band when you have the singer put up such an impenetrable screen of annoying.
  12. 2. Meh. Seems rather generic. It's well done, but that's about it. Repetitive, not too hard to think of something like this.
  13. 4. I had no real beef with this song. I found the subject matter mildly entertaining (I didn't pay attention to the lyrics; I rarely do, unless scanning for profanity to play on the air.) Once I get past my displeasure with the singer, this is a decent song.
  14. 3. Gah, ANOTHER acoustic solo at the end of the album! What did I JUST get through talking about?! (With Bangkok.) More tabla-bongos. And singers who sound like smokey windbags. Scratchy throat = unattractive. A slow finish to the album ...
Pretty generic rock. They try a few different styles and singers throughout the album; nothing spectacular. Male tenor singers (sometimes bad); they claim an Indian influence but they misuse instruments, playing tabla like bongos for example. Ugh.

311 Grass Roots Rock / (Reggae/Ska?) 3.43 47.8 Concert album I'm guessing, and usually those aren't so great (from what I've seen, Dream Theater is one of few exceptions.) I didn't realize their drummer was that good ("Applied Science") -- I knew he was good, but I just never knew what he could do. Although I didn't give this album such a high rating, it does give an idea as to how energetic they are in concert; I think it'd be fun to go see 'em live. 6/14/6
Slushco Clouds Indie Noise Rock 3.43 29.3 Clean. Recommend tracks 1, 5, 2, 4.
Bouncy vocals and NESesque synthesizers give this music a "fun" sort of feel (as well as a steady drum.) Distortion confuses it, though. Good "Indie Noise Rock", if you want to call it that -- it has a lot of pointless noise, I guess to hide the flatness of the singer's mediocre voice. Often add random synthesized noises at the end of their songs. (Why?)
The seven songs on this EP all sound alike, and by that I mean it seems like they follow the same formula with every song, and/or they play similarly in every song. 4/4 beats for the guitars in nearly every song, etc. I don't like albums that do that, and I tend to not like artists that make albums like that.

A track-by-track review:

  1. A bad recording of a bad song. This song makes no sense to me, it's just random stuff. There's no rhythm, his playing is quick and (as usual when guitarists try to play quickly) sloppy.
  2. First 10 seconds of this song flatout suck. How many times did he try recording this? It's impressive -- tremelo, fair free stroke, but the guitar still sounds a bit thin, and the recording not too nice.
  3. A talented guitarist, but he comes across as sloppy; not sure what it is. Delayed silencing of the strings, an awkward sense of rhythm? I dunno.
  4. This isn't really that good. It's just random fast notes. Ugh.
  5. Solo guitar is hard to pull off, but he tries. Part of his problem is he picks songs to try to show off talent but the songs he picks lack the melody, accompaniment, and bass necessary for a solo piece, so it's overall boring.
  6. SO SLOPPY, OMG. He can't pull this piece off on guitar: he lacks the bass, and while the melody is "flashing" (not really), he lacks the rest of the song to accompany it. That's his problem for many tracks on this album.
  7. A pretty jazz piece, it's still random, but good if you're in a mellow mood. I like it.
  8. Another example of something he tends to do. It's like he's manic. He takes a good song and plays it too quickly, rushing notes and being entirely random with it.
  9. Again, very difficult to follow. He randomly plays chords/notes quickly all over the fretboard, barely adhering to a hardly-established melody.
  10. Even with these annoyances, this isn't an altogether bad album; it's significantly better than other indie albums WMTS is sent. Should listen to before playing to determine if you like the tracks. This one is bluesy, standard progressions, little messy.
  11. This piece is one of the most coherent on the album. Clear, steady, and connected. Good!
  12. ... and the first 15 seconds are back to his randomness.
  13. I love this song, but his rendition is too soft: not enough strength in the melody. It's thin; only his shallow guitar and nothing else. I wonder how well his nails are contacting the strings; it seems weak, as if he's not giving it his best... Too short.
  14. Pretty end to the album.

I hate the singer's shrieks: He's like, just screaming, and it's absolutely horrendous, ear-splitting singing. Ruins the music... but that's part of their style: ear-wrenching horrific crap-noise, then sweet melodies. I prefer to Western dissonance to this idea of shrieking offkey to contrast mellow melodies. I'd say "Indie Noise J-Rock"? They use a lot of noise. Have some pretty good songs.

Five Foot Nine Country Indie, Country* 3.3 = ((5 * 4) + (3 * 3) + (2 * 2)) / 10 36.1 I think I was a little generous with this rating. The more I listen to the best-rated tracks on this album (the ones I'm recommending), the more obnoxious I'm finding them. This is not an album I'll ever listen to again.
NO: 5, 8. Recommend: 10, 1, 2, 3. Track by track commentary:
  1. I don't entirely understand what the point of this song is, but it's mildly catchy. A 4 star pop song.
  2. I'm kind of a sucker for female vocalists, and even "buh duh buh" can be nice. Countryesque steel string guitar, but nice melodies!
  3. I'm not entirely sure what, if anything, they're saying, but it's relatively laid-back, and not really obnoxious, although I'm reminded vaguely of country music for some reason (melody and singing style, perhaps?) Not bad. This song is beach-esque.
  4. Male singer is obtrusive, and doesn't have a good singing voice. (Bad decision having him sing.) A recapitulation of previous material, this track adds nothing and bored me.
  5. 2:09 "piss down rain quite like this" ... stupid, weird lyrics. Weird style. It's kind of a mesh of country with indie rock? They try some other instruments in this song, although just snippets.
  6. *Finally, clear, conspicuous country crap. They try to incorporate a violin, although they do a bad job. Lana's seven, and they like to sing her name a whole lot, over and over. Repetitive, boring. Harmonies are stereotypical country.
  7. I feel like I'm listening to one of the previous songs again. Bland, and all the same sounds and male-female harmony. Hahaha, they do a clap, clapclap, clap thing. They sing about a European Tour, and there's nothing European about this song.
  8. 1:00 "goddamn my luck sometime" Whoa, something different!!! Electronic synth ... This song is actually not as crap as the rest. So of course they have to swear to eliminate it from airplay. Retards.
  9. *"Give me sugar in the morning with my coffee, give me sugar in the evening with my tea. Sugar on the sabbath, sugar is my habit." Offensively stupid lyrics. I got a phone call and forgot this song was playing. This song is crap filler, like her sugar.
  10. Perhaps the most creative of the tracks; I bet they stuck it on the end to make the listener regard the album as a whole as better (from the psychological fact that you recall the first and last more clearly than the middle.) More instruments, better melo

Green Day Nimrod Pop Punk Rock 3.28 49 My biggest problem with Green Day, apart from the obnoxiousness of their singer, is the monotony of him and their formula. So much of it sounds the same. "Look at me I'm whining in my mic. Something stupid and it'll be alright." blah blah blah ...
I gave "Platypus" 5/5 stars simply because it was quick; they said what they wanted and shut up quickly. "Last Ride In" is actually pretty good; too bad they don't (or can't?) do more music like that; I actually might like them. The next track after it, "Jinx", got 2 of 5. It's, how should I put this, 'More of the Same.' And I really don't want four more years. "Take Back" sucks, 1 star.
The biggest problem with this album is IT'S BORING. Rule number one of Music Composition: Thou shalt not bore!!! (Special thanks to Dr. Linton for the knowledge he shared with us in Theory and Aural Skills II.)
I was impressed to discover that I'd given this and Dookie the same rating, as they're such very different albums.

Cramer I Sing The Body Electric Experimental 3.09 = ((1*5) + (2*4) + (5*3) + (3*2)) / 11 32.1

Clean. Recommend: 11, 5, 7, 8.

  1. Experimental, bizarre stuff. Weird lyrics whose melody doesn't match the background music; singing either atonal or half-spoken.
  2. His music isn't that entertaining. Male vocalist who sounds like every other indie male vocalist; tenor. Uses lot sporadic of synth keyboards.
  3. Pretty random. I think the melody he sings intentionally doesn't go with the background; the accompaniment music is rather ... sporadic, random, and intentionally jangly and odd.
  4. This is just weird. "I swim as if in a sink, as if in a sea, as if in a sea. I have perceived that to be with those I like is enough, to stop in company," he sings his poetry atonally, and then came up with random loops of sound to accompany himself. An easy copout from melody, to just speak it and act artistic.
  5. Instrumental randomness. Kinda cool. Just stringed instruments being played shakily up and down.
  6. A good example of when too much dissonance loses its effect and results in bland badness. So far the entire album has been the same, experimental noise melody with offkey singing, dissonance. Listen to this song to get a feel for the entire album.
  7. He's good at what he does, though. Weird melodies that don't make sense, they have a cohesion in their disarray. (Scribble a bunch of lines in a blob -- don't they go together? Not that difficult.) A little annoying but interesting.
  8. This time his poetry and singing is just stupid. It's getting old. Being weird isn't that cool anymore. The jazz piano is nice, though. Proof of some other talent besides being neurotic.
  9. Randomness. This time they included some clarinets with synthesized sounds, heavy drums, with stupid vocalist saying nothing except "If Any Thing Is Sacred." Sadly, I had thought stupidity like this only existed in visual art. Ends with chimes.
  10. Instrumental piece, woodwinds, nothing except dissonance with varying dynamics. Boring.
  11. More stream of consciousness poetry. The most melodic, I'm disappointed he followed reason and put it at the end. Poetry lacking -- tries to list technical body parts, but says "under the leg" when he doesn't know it, etc. Follows same formula.

Mia Doi Todd La Ninja: Amor And Other Dreams Of Manzanita New Age / Avant-garde Electronica 3.08

Recommend tracks 1 (Best), 3, 11,12
Really psychedelic-dreamy. Very good if you like being "out there." Clean. This woman has a shaky voice, sings mystically and reminds me very much of Professor Trelawny from Harry Potter... Uses a lot of ambient side-effects. At first it was cool new age electronica mysticism, but it's beginning to sound like an excuse to ramble on about nothing. She isn't the best singer, but she manages to waiver along her winding melodies fair enough. Lyrics are certainly "out there." Have never heard any other music like this before, except perhaps some by Sean Lennon, if you're familiar with his weird album Into The Sun.
Her album title is very appropriate; that's pretty much what this album is about. Her songs are very dreamy. For example, "Muscle, Bone & Blood (Chessie Remix)" is an electronic trance, whereas "Shikibu" is a musical manifestation of a bizarre dream, a mishmash of sounds and noises. Three of the tracks are instrumental. I appreciate her ideas, even if the presentation was wanting. She's pretty far in outer space; I don't see many "average college guys" liking her.

Steel String Theory The North Buncombe Years Country/Bluegrass 3 = ((5*1) + (4*2) + (3*4) + (2*2) + (1*1)) / 10 44.8

Clean, as far as I could tell. Recommend: 9, 6, 1, 10.
I was skeptical about this album, and told our new music director Brad that I flat-out hated country, and that it's not good for me to do this album 'cause I don't have any comparison -- because I, as a rule, do NOT listen to "kuntry". He told me to broaden my horizons, though, so here I am, trying to listen to this album ... Listen to their album The North Buncombe Years -- every cliche about country music they manage to hit. Not to be read as an opinion, but rather, to emphasize how pop country they are. The vocalist has an extremely scratchy voice, which he uses to croon throughout the entire album, about long-lost love, etc -- stereotypical country lyrics.

  1. 3. A good singersongwriter, it seems. Good sound, makes me think "bluegrass", and I don't know much about bluegrass -- good marketing? He has a fair instrumental section in this song, even if it does feel a little thin. A good rhythm you can tap your toes to if you're into country. Song is pretty static -- stays the same the entire almost five minutes; not necessarily a good thing... couldn't really tell what he was singing, although it certainly wasn't covered up by any distortion.
  2. 3. Interlude from slow to fast made me think strongly of Jack Johnson -- he strums the guitar and sings in the same manner, except kuntry instead of surf-ie. Otherwise indistinguishable from the first track (apart from a few notes from another instrument;) I hope this isn't a trend ...
  3. 3. OMG A FIDDLE AND BANJO COMBINATION. The vocalist is kind of cliche, though; he has this "rough" country male singer voice. A nice instrumental here, I guess, makes you feel at home, I guess. Again, the instrumental lasts around thirty seconds. Has that obnoxious noise-strum on a guitar to accompany his singing -- you know, when they hold the guitar and mute the strings and strum it in rhythm, even though they're not playing anything. Beats a morraca, I guess. Again, I cannot pay attention to the lyrics because his voice is just one constant stream, with a melody that ranges four notes. And another solo "bridge" that lasts thirty seconds.
  4. 2. Okay guys, for this track, let's REALLY show off how scratchy and rugged his voice is. In fact, let's turn down the other instruments so we can make it REEEALLY OBVIOUS. Light up another one, Johnny, 'cause you sound like utter crap. And, since that's the only emphasis of this song, the sound of your voice -- he repeats "I won't be your last mistake, 'cause you know I will be gone...", it's obvious he's not singing anything important. With a steel guitar to accompany his "rugged" voice complete with twanged strings when he sings the last verse. They are really hitting the stereotypes, here...
  5. 1. Oh wow, a different singer. High, tenor. "Why did you let me go, how could I let you slip through my hands? I thought we'd be together DARLIN', ... you can't not deny me that wicked life of sin. And I'd not felt heartache," -- complete with the vocal duet. Mandolin/banjo solo from 0:57 - 1:27. I'm not exaggerating; the songs are your standard pop 3:40, with thirty-second solos. Singing about heartache. Can kuntry get any more stereotypical? Cliche? "NEVER FELT HEARTACHE, NEVER FELT PAAAAAAIN, black as a valley, and it's shedding your name." I think he meant to say "shouting", there, except he said "shedding." What is "black as a valley", exactly? When I think of a valley I think of a meadow dipped down, you know, green. Not black. And when I think of shaddows cast onto a valley, I think of a darker green. You know, green but not getting direct sunlight. I'm saving this track because it's THAT bad. 1. I think they introduced this singer because he's worse than the first.
  6. 4. Oh man, they got indian instruments now starting the song. This outta be good -- wait, they're playing the stereotypical indian melody (harmonic minor of course, since that's all they play over in India) on steel-string guitars. A nice breather from the krappy kuntry, although I'm not sure what it's doing on this album. I guess they get their name from something. A comical "American" take on what Indian music is -- oh wow it's funny after 3:30 -- I'm saving this one, too. Also pretty bad, but I'm giving it 4 stars because I think it'll be the highlight of the album. And then they play the "indian" riffs on the mandolin with the same flavor as if it were country.
  7. 2. Now we're back to rhythmic strumming, and singing about "never thought I'd see this world, ... my love she brewed up true, for a taste of revenge I hear dying, in the twilight I hear alone, for a poor bones were told, and my sorrow and my hatred in my mind..." I guess you could call it mood music, if you're mad at a lost love -- and we know how often that happens when you're a kuntry rockstar. "Twenty years have come and go and twenty more I've yet to spend, lovin' you like I did," that's the refrain. Hey, I have a solution for you -- kill yourself. You won't spend those twenty more in such misery, hitting that guitar in 4/4. "And the judge he gave me 40 years for spyin', that day's passed like faded photographs whethered and still." Seriously, do it. Forget your revenge -- do it for me, for producing this album. Rusty Bill, singing tenor, with all twangy guitars -- that's where they get their name. Nothing but twangy steel guitars.
  8. 3. The mandolin is a nice breather after that last depressing let-down of a song. (Of course, I absolutely cannot stand the singer's style, but that is the essence of country -- just like their stereotypical lyrics -- so I must oblige it.) "We first set sail in a small port town, got ugly at dinner. ... All hands on the port deck, drop the AAAAANCHOR, ... steward made his FASSST," and they begin a vocal-duet about "sailin' 'til I die." Wow. I didn't know kuntry could be about sailing -- did cows learn how to swim? "Drank aWAAAAAY a long work day with chills and beers and wine... in the hills of Caroline." I don't even think THEY know what they're singing... Ending is nice with mandolins, although they kill it by dropping a guitar or something (a twang at the end that didn't go with the rest.)
  9. 5. In case they couldn't make the goal of their album any more obvious, the title of this track is "Country Boy." Right. You're a country boy, and I like country, therefore I should buy your album. That aside, this is an upbeat song, talking about hitching a train, with "wheels rattlin' down yo' track, ... doin' ninety miles an 'our. ... Little country boy, waitin' fo' yo' momma, ain't never gonna see her again." This is actually a very good track -- nicest melodies I've seen on the entire album, with a nice beat, and the 30-second solo fits nicely. Very catchy; I actually like this track! They follow the same formula with the vocal duets, verse/verse/verse/solo/verse/verse/solo, and so on, except this is the best melody and countermelody I've ever seen from a country song (all, I don't know, forty songs I've heard.)
  10. 4. An incredibly slow piece; terrible juxtapositioning with the previous -- this should've at least preceded it; probably should've been in the first half of the album, inbetween the intermediate tracks. "Silent Lapse Of Soul" is the name -- it should be an artistic piece. Just, play slower and slower, and then ... slowly stop playing ... drop the instruments ... and then the last minute of the album is utter silence. That would've been cool in a bizarre sort of way. No. This is just a slow song. A very slow song involving violin, mandolin, bass, steel-string guitar played at the very bottom of the string to give it the twangiest noise possible.

Black Sun Black Sun Alternative (actually "Indie", as it was produced by two friends?) ((3 * 4) + (2 * 2) + 1 + (6 * 3)) / 12 = 2.92 50.5

Clean. Recommend: 2, 6, 10.
They're relatively creative; the singing kills it. Some of the worst singing I've ever heard is on this album. The album actually has a theme – although I'm not entirely sure what their message is – unlike other modern albums, which are merely formulaic (lacking creativity). Unfortunately, this album also falls short creatively: they utilize your stereotypical "drone something and use minor leaps to make it sound arabic" technique. (For an example, see track 4.)

A track by track review:

  1. Horrible vocalists. Music isn't bad, but not altogether good.
  2. The vocalists are absolutely horrible. Poor guitar over a dirge of bad singers. I couldn't finish this track, it was so horrible.
  3. I cannot stress to you how horrible these singers are. You can't focus on any instrument or melody from anything other than their obnoxious vocals. This is what happens when your underspoken math teacher puts down the pen and grabs the mic.
  4. A drum solo? What the hell! Nobody does this anymore, especially when it's A) not live, and B) a mediocre hobbyist drummer! v_v; for shame.
  5. These vocalists make me very uncomfortable. Kind of creepy, nasally singing. All the songs have this pseudo-indian drone-effect. Kinda lame.
  6. Worst singing. Ever. The song is actually kind of cool, but then he opens his mouth and kills everything his vocal chord vibrations touch.
  7. At this point you're hearing the same stuff regurgitated. They try to pull off the indian droning effects, except it's the same crappy lydian/dorian/mixolydian scale over and over (I forgot which it was. I don't have my guitar with me to find out.)

Kind of unusual. Dark, somewhat emotional. Mostly electronica, gothic trancelike. Pretty original. Use a minute and a half of fading out, though, which can get annoying quickly. Likes to pad his songs with emptiness. He can't sing (and wails in a few of them.)

Maps of Norway Sister Stations Indie Rock 2.9 = ((4 * 2) + (3 * 5) + (3 * 2)) / 10 38.4

NO: 8. Recommend: 3, 10.
Track by track review:

  1. Typical bland indie rock. Rather simplistic; not much layered, minimal distortion. Female vocalist. Drummer. Two guitars. Typical verse instrumental-refrain thing. Good for background noise: not boring, but not too interesting to distract you.
  2. I really don't know quite what to say about this. A little annoying but not altogether bad. The "Rip it all, I'm at my best when I least expect it" is really the annoying part. The one-bass note "bassline", and the solo consisting of ONE CHORD. No end.
  3. The beginning of this song (first 20 seconds) is actually very freaking cool. Nonsensical lyrics sung like a retard, but the song is actually not monotonous and actually very energetic and fairly melodic.
  4. Fairly random. First half of the song is almost as if they just decided to play random things and put it together and call it a song. Solo (2:15ish) isn't bad, but again, not altogether good. Sounds like a group with absolutely no formal education.
  5. To be honest, I forgot that this song was playing until it was more than halfway through. Not a band I'd be interested in seeing live. This song, as per their formula, has repetitive monotonous guitars, actually, monotonous everything.
  6. Once again, REPEATING THE SAME THING FOR 2.75 MINUTES ISN'T COOL, GUYS. You are not a winner, but thanks for playing!
  7. She's not even really singing anything! She's just making random syllables with her mouth! UR IN MER'CA, TALK ENGLISH. And that's guitar, that's hitting one chord. Get off the strings and back in school. COLLEGE ALGEBRA ISN'T THAT HARD.
  8. EXPLICIT: 40: "dropped the fuckin' bomb" ... This sounds like track #2 ? ... and #4 ... and every other track on this album? Same rhythm, same vocalist, same guitar, same drumming, OVER AND OVER, GET ME OUT OF THIS TIME LOOP!
  9. They try to act like they're being different with this song, but really it's the same thing at a different tempo with a slightly different rhythm. Her voice is old, the two-step drumming is pathetic, and the guitar is just stupid. This track is annoying.
  10. This track also has a 45 second intro. Getting to the final track on this album, it suddenly dawns on me that I haven't listened to (or understood -- not sure which) one word she's said this entire album. Oh well. This album ends as blandly as it starts.

Madking Ludwig Madking Ludwig Grunge Rock 2.78

Distorted (dirty) rock. Clean. Recommend tracks 1,3,7,9.
Drummer has some talent. The vocalists are punkish (sometimes wannabe Metallica, sometimes 311) and sometimes accompanied with a highpitched squeal. Generic rock (following the pattern of chorus refrain chrous instrumental etc), with an exotic instrument thrown occasionally in as an attempt to spice it up ("Aqaba", "Firefly".) Flute + rock... Jethro Tull, anyone? ... which would be cool if the rock was better, but it's pretty basic boring stuff; the songs are at their best when the flute is playing.
They don't understand the use of distortion at all, and ruin several songs as a result. ("Spinwheel" is pure crap, for example, and six and a half minutes long. Read the lyrics to "Tumbleweed". Are they even saying anything? I've come up with a better story from the random word generator in Creative Writer.) The guitars are identical throughout the ENTIRE album. After a while the same distortion starts to grate on you; hard to listen to this album start to finish. The melodies they're singing really aren't anything special, either.
I didn't see anything particularly special here and it struck me as very mediocre, save the cool flutes. If you like rock with lots of distortion and cool flutes you might like it, though.

Agression Grind Kings Skater Punk 2.68 = ((1*5) + (2*4) + (4*3) + (9*2)) / 16 54.5

Recommend: 16, 13, 2. NO: 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 15.

  1. Sings about skating. The music feels kinda thin. Drums aren't that full, singer isn't that great, chords are simple and repetitive; lyrics outright suck. "It's a way to release, it's a way to release, energee! energee!" Terrible. 1.
  2. "Grind Kings! Skate, destroy! Grind... kings! Skate... destroy!" Good job. Apparently this is music to be played while skating, or making a skating, or making a skating video. It isn't very exciting. Feels empty, forced, and silly. 2.
  3. Apparently this is skater punk (first I've ever heard.) I think it's terrible. "Razors! Razors cutting! Razors. Razors slicing! Razors. Razors ripping!!" Lyrics are extremely stupid. So far each song has followed a simple 1.5 minute formula. Sad. 2.
  4. Locals Only. "This beach is for locals only; don't you know you can't surf at our beach?" A great song to listen to if you're a country bumpkin who, having no life, has never left his town before.
  5. Not really much to describe with their music. Listen to one 1.5 min. song and you've heard the entire album -- literally. All fast paced, same drums in every song, same guitar distortion and patterns, same agitated lyrics to skate to. What are this song even about? The only words are "Ripped Off, watch out Cleopatra," ...
  6. Body Count, another 6 second guitar solo type song.
  7. Each song is a minute and a half long, is just guitar distortion, simple drums, just something to skate to -- for a minute.
  8. Obnoxious vocals when they're singing (female guest singers.) You might like the guitar distortion though; is the most guitar instrumental.
  9. Not worth mentioning, either. 36 seconds of the same material. Bet they got it on the first take.
  10. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 let's go!" Let's go skate this! Surely no one skates to something so lame. Obnoxious "xtreme" retards. Surf this! Skate this! Sang intentionally with an obnoxious voice. Wouldn't a real skater listen to heavy metal?
  11. Catchy. About black magic, kind of a rip off of Black Sabbath.
  12. Quick rock ditty about cheating on your wife, and getting caught. "Bet you can't wait to go out there and do it again!" with goofy/obnoxious vocals.
  13. Wild guitar opening -- title is Guillotine. Entirely instrumental; listen to hear how they rock.
  14. A song about the media? "Tryin' to shape how America lives." Again, one minute eight seconds, the same as the entire album. Fast distorted rock, meant for a full minute of skating.
  15. Funny how all the best tracks have profanity. Sings about a personal experience? They were fighting for fun then drunk guys came and beat the crap out of them, more or less.
  16. "You lost your lease, so rest in peace." LOL. The most dynamic, and creative, of any of the songs on this album -- actually good! Probably because they're actually singing about someone who died, and it actually sparked some creativity.

Kristen Cothron Love Letters From A Fool Singer/Songwriter 2.67 39.5

I listened to this album, rated each song, and jotted down my thoughts in the Comments box in iTunes. The first number is the tracks rating of 5. Copy and pasted:

  1. 1. It's "daaanggerrrrreeess" to repeat the same thing twenty times. The emphasis is on her voice, notice how she's louder than everything else in the song? Okay, Miss American Idol, step off the soapbox and let's hear the band play -- repeat 1234...
  2. 2. I see the same thing here, too. The music is obviously only there to accompany her. It's all about her! Check the album art: only pictures of her face, and her. I'm not particularly enraptured by her voice (the primay focus), and therefore am bored.
  3. 2. Fast, it brings life to this otherwise so-far-boring album. It still sounds like the band recorded, then the volume was turned down on it and she sings over it. Narcissistic? The result for my imagination is a girl, midtwenties, singing karaoke to canned music.
  4. 3. The title track. Pretty generic. For some reason the background music always seems to repeat itself.
  5. 3. All the songs on this album sound the same. Maybe it would be better if she didn't sing the same in every song, and if they didn't play the same in every song. She belongs on American Idol, not in the Music Industry.
  6. 3.7. I liked this track. I enjoyed the effect of the guitar and her singing, although the wail at 2:06 was too much, and she needed to lay off the vocals and let the song fade out way more without her. Maybe that's 'cause I just got off RA training, tired, and found it more relaxed than I was, and not as pretentious (by that I mean the music struck me as background for a "look at me" singer) as the previous half of the album.
  7. 4. Slows down, more relaxed. When it's not assuming to be rock and roll, it's acceptable.
  8. 3. The singer has talent, don't get me wrong. Good bluesy... but she's not done anything else. Has good control of her voice, but she sings the same in every song -- listening to this album is like listening to one long song -- shows poor songwriting.
  9. 2. Is this blues? It's ... lacking, a lot. Guitar solo is decent, and it lasts all of twenty seconds. Then we're back to ... well, her singing like she does, and not much else.
  10. 3. Well, at least it's only 40 minutes long. This album serves better as an audition tape to get into a graduate school for popular music than as a commercial music album, at least for me. Some creepy guy might fall in love with her voice, but personally, there was too much of her singing the same things and not much of anything else.

Peal Beautiful Baby Elephant Country Acoustic Rock 2.63

Acoustic singer/songwriter meets with a rock band? Clean. Recommend track 5...
All the songs pretty much sound the same (singer sings the same in every song, and the rhythms are the same, and he follows the same patterns with his songs) but if you like the style, there you go. He sings "like he means it" like Mraz/Mayer (I like Mraz's singing better), he's another modern crooner, and he seems to be singing for the women. The acoustic guitar that accompanies each song (supposedly the singer playing?) is irrelevant, but the electric guitars fill it in, and are as good as generic rhythm guitars tend to be...
Okay, I'm listening to this album from start to finish, and I really don't like hearing the same song thirteen times. None of the songs really have a point, either. It's just pointless drivel coming out with masculine singing. When you feel the need to sing "Uh uuuuh uuh" ("rely"), take the hint and stop singing. When the entire album starts to sound the same, it's a good sign of a bad artist...

H.I.M. Dark Light Pop Rock 2.6 45.3 They sound like they studied commercial music in a college somewhere, and this is the fruit of their labors. I don't know what goth-rock appeal they seem to be running after, but it's pretty silly. Check out the track names! Vampire Heart; Under The Rose ('drowning in flame, to prove you wrong and scare you away, ... your heart's under the rose [deep funny gasp]'); Dark Light; Drunk On Shadows; In The Nightside Of Eden? Seriously, guys, what the crap? I much prefer orbit service: at least he does the haunting techno, and his lyrics don't insult intelligence. nailed to a cross together as solitude begs us to stay? WTF??
As for the texture, I'll quote Andrew Eidson. you can't polish goth rock. However, you CAN polish Pop Rock. They pull off the 'goth' look like Green Day has turned their Punk look – like sellouts. Both have the eyeliner, both use the turning camera on themselves while they sing petty lyrics into their pretty microphones.
I started over The Face Of God because what I was hearing wasn't making sense. I'm following it more closely now with the aid of a random lyrics page, just to make sure I'm hearing it correctly. Love's our shadow on the wall with the face of god.
Yeah, that makes less than some sense... What about the face of god? 'God' god? If love is a shadow it isn't really love, is it? Where does the phrase with the face of god even come in?? It's like they wrote these lyrics drunk one night on a café napkin, and half of it wore away and they said, **** it, let's go with it. I'd kill to share your pain? Give me a break. It's actually a pretty good song, except it's so horrendously stupid, and they're singing it so seriously, as if the lyrics make any sense at all. Shallow crap like you dream what i'm dreaming/and see what i'm seeing. So poetic! ... I outright laughed when they sang the last God. By far the worst lyrics I've ever seen, and I believe this is the worst track on the album. 1 star of 5, only for the sake of the music. And they just get better and better. Drunk on shadows ... Killing ourselves a kiss at a time. say goodbye to fate before it's too late (Play Dead.) Do you even know what fate IS??? It's something that can't be avoided. Before it's too late for something that will inevitably occur? Their lyrics are mind-chillingly brainless, and indeed are they only 'chilling' thing about this wannabe goth band. forever we'll be crucified to a dream? omg, so cool, imagine the pain, for all eternity! and omg their distorted guitars are SO COOL, and i just LOVE their low voices while they sing the refrain!!! (In the Nightside of Eden.)
I'm not the only one who thinks so: People often say HIM's lyrics are like poetry; I was not expecting this to be true but these are just plain trash, a very poor effort all together. and The lyrics just do not come close to matching the hype they receive and in general are quite bad. Aside from the lyrics and some vocal problems, this song has its enjoyable points, both from ToWhatEnd's review.
I'm willing to guess the majority of their fans are people who don't speak English, because this album's pretty good if you have absolutely no clue what they're saying, and can get past their streamlined wannabe-gothness.

Blue October Foiled Emo 2.46 Clean. Recommend tracks 3, 7. Psychedelic-dreamy. Good if you like emo. Bunch of self-loathing. Lead singer (male) sounds like he's gonna start crying (seriously.) Vaguely like U2 in some places. Try a variety of styles; lyrics tied to self, emotion tending towards angst. Vocalist whines occasionally. April 5, 2006
Spencer Durham Much More Than Words Pop Rock ("Southern") 2.42 = ((6 * 3) + (5 * 2) + 1) / 12 42.1 A track-by-track review:
  1. What is it that makes this pop rock any different from any other rock? (The first question I asked, roughly ten seconds after the track started. I already knew the entire album was going to be this pop rock formulaic cash machine garbage ... because they're not creative enough to make any songs that are actually UNIQUE!) It reminds me of the concert I attended at Belmont, where students who studied pop rock put on their own show. The lyrics are empty, the music is basic and repetitive...
  2. A country sound, still generic (southern?) pop rock. Bad lyrics like "seems like a good sense of humor is a thing to waste 'cause no one's laughin' anymore." STUDY ENGLISH. Insert harmonica. Ultimately this song is about nothing.
  3. "We all want the fog to be lifted. Then blue skies seem bluer every day. Only words I have to say." ... once again, a song about nothing. Just an excuse to have that "manly singing" element and repetitive "southern" rock. Lame.
  4. "That evil hearted woman done crept up inside a' my mind." Twangy, stereotypical "country" rhythm. They even try to simulate a train noise in the background. What does a train have to do with a woman? Nothing: he's marketing "southern rock". Pop garbage.
  5. Seems the only thing this guy has going for him is his country-male singing. Of course, he's credited with acoustic guitar in every song, but
