Prayers

Most of these prayers I've found in prayer cards freely distributed at various parishes in the United States. I've tried to reproduce them faithfully, sometimes changing formatting (for the web). Here is a list (which I hope to hyperlink later):

Other interesting writings:

The Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from Christ's side, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
O good Jesus, hear me
Within Thy wounds hide me
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee
From the malicious enemy defend me
In the hour of my death call me
And bid me come unto Thee
That I may praise Thee with Thy saints and with Thy angels Forever and ever.
Amen

The Anima Christi is a prayer from around the 14th century. It is often recited after receiving Holy Communion.

A Christmas Prayer

Lord Jesus,
As we celebrate your birth,
we proclaim the right of
every child to be born.

As we pray for peace on earth,
we proclaim peace to
children in the womb.

May our Christmas gift
be a Culture of Life,
for you are Lord forever
and ever. Amen!

Daily Offering Prayer

This guy who feels a particular family devotion helps a great deal visited a church I was at and encouraged the entire parish to share it. Among the materials he distributed was this prayer.

O my Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart in union with all the Masses throughout the world; in reparation for sins, for the intentions of my family and friends, for the Holy Father, the Church and the souls in purgatory.

Thank You Lord for all Your gifts and blessings. Please keep us safe today in Your love and grace, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary and all the angels and saints. Amen.

A Disciple's Prayer

Loving God and Father, help us to be people of prayer, committed to the person and message of Jesus your Son.

Help us to grasp the integrity and beauty of the truths of our faith and the transforming power of your grace.

Nourish and strengthen us as people of faith, disciples of Jesus, committed to the mission of the Church and eager to share the gospel without restraint.

Let our hearts burn within us as we catch glimpses of your heart in Jesus, for through him, we know your loving plan for us.

We ask this through Jesus the Christ who lives with you and the Holy Spirit in one loving Trinity. Amen

Japan, Novena to Mary for (after the 2011 Earthquake Catastrophe)

This prayer is taken from a Facebook page shared with me by あんどう ともこ. Out of respect, I have not edited the English:

In Japan March 17th is celebrated as the day a French missionary named Bernard Petitjean (who later became the first Bishop of Japan) received a visit of a group of Japanese people at the Oura Church in 1865, some months after its completion. The visitors went to the priest and declared to have "the same heart" he had, and asked the priest to show them the image of Our Lady. When they saw it they were sure they had the same faith. The group of peasants then explained the priest that in the nearby villages there were thousands of Christians like them, that spend almost 3 centuries without priests, and transmitting their faith from one generation to another, even under persecution and martyrdom. Pope Pius IX called it the miracle of the Orient.

Now, after 146 years, let's pray again for Our Lady, so she help all the thousands of people suffering from the consequences of the earthquake and the tsunami that occurred in Northeast Japan. During the following 9 days, until the feast of the Visitation of Our Lady (March 25th), join us to make a Novena to pray for these people, and also to the whole Japan, so many people can someday "find" Our Lady, as these peasants did.

During 9 days, let's pray everyday a short prayer to Our Lady:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you, O virgin of virgins, my mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the Word Incarnate! Despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer them. Amen.

Japan, Prayer for Recovery

This prayer is taken from a Facebook page shared with me by あんどう ともこ (I have altered it a little):

For the following intentions we pray:

  1. To ensure enough and appropriate support to all the victims in need.
  2. Eternal peace for those already departed into Thy hands.
  3. To minimize the damage to nuclear power plants and for safety and peace to return to the region.

Almighty and Eternal Lord, Japan is now endangered by this significant natural disaster. Please turn your eyes of mercy towards us. Give us trust, peace and courage in you. Please protect those who have been victimized by this incident, and lead all souls into your Kingdom. Have mercy on us all, so that the expanding fear for the nuclear power plants will be minimized. Give power and grace especially to those who are working to stop its expansion. Please grant us your forgiveness, as we are sinful. Yet we are hopeful and trust in you, in penance with contrite hearts. Lord, we beg you to grant us the favors we ask in trust. In the name of the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The Miserere: Prayer of Repentance (Psalm 51:3-21, NAB)

Have mercy on me, God, in accord with your merciful love; in your abundant compassion blot out my transgressions.
Thoroughly wash away my guilt; and from my sin cleanse me.
For I know my transgressions; my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your eyes So that you are just in your word, and without reproach in your judgment.
Behold, I was born in guilt, in sin my mother conceived me.
Behold, you desire true sincerity; and secretly you teach me wisdom.
Cleanse me with hyssop, that I may be pure; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
You will let me hear gladness and joy; the bones you have crushed will rejoice.

Turn away your face from my sins; blot out all my iniquities.
A clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a steadfast spirit.
Do not drive me from before your face, nor take from me your holy spirit.
Restore to me the gladness of your salvation; uphold me with a willing spirit.
I will teach the wicked your ways, that sinners may return to you.
Rescue me from violent bloodshed, God, my saving God, and my tongue will sing joyfully of your justice.
Lord, you will open my lips; and my mouth will proclaim your praise.
For you do not desire sacrifice or I would give it; a burnt offering you would not accept.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a contrite, humbled heart, O God, you will not scorn.

Treat Zion kindly according to your good will; build up the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will desire the sacrifices of the just, burnt offering and whole offerings; then they will offer up young bulls on your altar.

"My Guardian Angel" Prayer

Shared by Patrick Madrid on the 2011 March 16 podcast of Catholic Answers LIVE, with guest Sr. Rosalind Moss.

Angel of God, my guardian dear
to whom God's love entrusts me here,
ever this day, be at my side
to light, to guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Prayer to End Abortion

This daily prayer was taken from this Priests for Life page, where you can order free prayer cards and notify them of your intention to pray it daily.

Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life,
and for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.
I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion,
yet I rejoice that you have conquered death
by the Resurrection of Your Son.
I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.
Today I commit myself
never to be silent,
never to be passive,
never to be forgetful of the unborn.
I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement,
and never to stop defending life
until all my brothers and sisters are protected,
and our nation once again becomes
a nation with liberty and justice,
not just for some, but for all.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen!

Prayer to Know My Vocation

Lord Jesus, up until now You have been quietly preparing me to be Your disciple. Now the time of preparation is ending. I seem to hear You say to me as You said once to Peter: Will you also go away? Peter replied, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

I stand with Peter. Through prayer and counsel, show me, Lord, where it is in Your vineyard that You want me to serve. Then give me strength to be faithful.

Mary, Mother and Model, help me to respond in generous love to the call of your divine son. Amen

The Serenity Prayer

Copied from this webpage, I think the first paragraph is well known.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Have confidence in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not upon thy own prudence.
In all thy ways think on him, and he will direct thy steps. (DRB Proverbs 3:5-6)

Prayer for Vocations

Heavenly Father, call many holy young people to consecrated life for the sake of your kingdom. Call an abundance of virtuous men to serve in ordained ministry, as laborers for your harvest. Call numerous others to faithful, chaste and fruitful love in the sacrament of marriage, as signs and witnesses of Christ's love for his Church. Through baptism you have called all your children, in whatever state of life, to love and serve you. Fill us with your Holy Spirit and grant us each the grace to follow you in perfect obedience and charity. With Mary and Joseph as our models and intercessors, we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
